Which Season is Best for a Photoshoot in New Mexico?

If you are planning an outdoor photoshoot in New Mexico, you’ll definitely want to pay attention to this article!

If you’ve lived in New Mexico long, or even visited for a stint, you’ve probably hear someone say, “if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes,” at least a time or two. And, while it’s true that sometimes you’ll be rewarded for sitting out a downpour with a sunny sky and a rainbow five minutes later, there are other times it’s best to not even bother.

Times of Year to Avoid

  1. Winter
Avoid planning an outdoor photoshoot during the coldest months of late January thru February (especially if small children or elderly are involved). Pictures are never fun when everyone is freezing. You’re much better off booking an indoor session until the earth thaws out a little.

  2. Early Spring

New Mexico becomes a wind tunnel during the months of March, April, and Early May. If you plan a session during these months, consider an indoor session or be prepared to reschedule due to wind, unless you like the look of wind-blown hair and enjoy being blasted with sand.

The Best Times of Year to Book

  1. Fall
Fall is by far the most temperate time of year in New Mexico. The days start cooling off just enough to start enjoying the outdoors after the sweltering summer. With highs in the 70s and 80s, a lower chance of wind and rain, and beautiful changing leaves, it’s the busiest time of year for photographers, so be sure to book well enough in advance.

  2. Early Summer

Just before the summer heat really cranks up, and just after the winds have settled down, there are a few weeks in May and June that are really great for outdoor photos. The longer evenings and newly returned greenery are amazing for beautiful photos.

Of course, there are one-offs during every season, and mother nature can be unpredictable, but this has been my experience as a photographer in New Mexico. You just have to keep an eye on the weather and be ready for anything.
